Calum Scott has been a household name ever since his 3x platinum cover of Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” and his 5x platinum smash “You Are The Reason” took the world by storm. With over 10 billion streams worldwide, his music has soundtracked everything from weddings to heartfelt goodbyes, cementing his place as the voice of life’s most emotional moments. Following his acclaimed 2022 album Bridges—which gave us hits like “Rise” (named one of Rolling Stone’s “50 Most Inspirational LGBTQ Songs of All Time”), “Biblical,” and “If You Ever Change Your Mind”—Avenoir promises to take us on an even deeper journey.
So, what’s the story behind the intriguing title? Calum reveals that Avenoir is inspired by John Koenig’s The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, where it’s defined as “the desire that memory could flow backwards.” Picture this: life as a rower, moving forward but always looking back at where you’ve been. “The songs on this album speak to both regret and sorrow and to undying love—a plea to live life to its fullest,” Calum shares. “I truly believe we are made from our successes and our challenges, from adapting and overcoming. The concept of Avenoir challenges all of us to live in the present… it’s the surprises in life and the not knowing that makes it terrifying, but also truly magical.”
And if the lead single “God Knows” is any indication, Avenoir is about to be an emotional rollercoaster. Dropping today, the track is a gorgeous blend of intimacy and grandeur, showcasing Calum’s signature soulful voice. “This song came from a pretty rough patch in a relationship,” he explains. “It’s for anyone who has made mistakes, said things in anger, or pushed people away. I wrote ‘God Knows’ as an unapologetic and desperate act of love to want to make things right again.” Starting with a simple piano and vocal arrangement, the song explodes into a majestic pop/rock anthem, complete with fuzzed-out textures, heart-pounding rhythms, and a jaw-dropping key change that’ll give you chills. Produced by frequent collaborator Jon “MAGS” Maguire & The Nocturns (known for working with Jax Jones and Tiësto), and partly recorded at Peter Gabriel’s iconic Real World Studios, “God Knows” is a dazzling taste of what’s to come.
